Situated on the shores of the May River in Bluffton, SC is The Bluffton Oyster Company at 63 Wharf St. The South Carolina Department of Commerce names this business as one of the 10 oldest and still operating businesses in the state. The buildings location is a testament to the long-standing history of their business as the building sits on reclaimed land that has been built up by decades of discarded oyster shells on the site.
The abundant oyster beds in the area serve up some of the best tasting oysters that can be found anywhere. In addition to the oysters, the local fishermen also harvest clams, shrimp, fish, soft shell crabs and blue crabs. Of the 15 fisherman and 12 oyster shuckers, most are over 65 years old and have been in this business their entire life. The Bluffton Oyster Company shuck and package oysters on site daily during the oyster season which is typically September through April.

The Toomer family has long been in the fishing industry dating back over 100 years. The family owned and operated oyster canneries in various locations on Hilton Head Island in the early 1900rsquo;s. The family tradition continues with The Bluffton Oyster Company as family members from both Larry and Tinarsquo;s side join in to help with the daily operations.
